A guide to the beaches in Goa

Goa has become legendary in its own right as tourist destination of choice by travelers all over the world. There are several reasons why Goa is considered the perfect getaway by many. Its perfect beaches are one, the numerous ancient churches and heritage structures are another. Goa is known for its flora and fauna too, situated as it is in the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot. But the best known reason for the tourists to keep coming, is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Wild nightlife, the impeccable Goan cuisine and the carnivals and festivals attract people from all over.

Goa has a coastline extending to 125 kms and the beaches cover a total area of 83 km. These beaches offer something for everyone, from luxury to nature to the active psychedelic trance scene.

Anjuna beach

Famous in the sixties as a popular hippie hang out, Anjuna beach is still a happening place. The Flea market is held on Wednesdays at the beach. Apart from Curlies, Paradiso disco, the well known places of entertainment, there are several other good places.

Located in North Goa, Anjuna is about 18 km from Panjim.the closest railway station is Thivim.

Arambol beach

Arambol has become the new favorite site for hippie culture. Many people stay long term over here. Alternative therapies and Water sports are in plenty. There is a chance to spot some dolphins also, if you take a dolphin sight seeing trip. The nightlife is quite good, though not quite wild.

Located in North Goa,Arambol is about 50 km from Panjim. The closest railway station is Pernem.

Candolim Beach

Unique, as it has cleanliness and a peaceful atmosphere mostly, Candolim beach is relatively less populated. The beach is lined with several good restaurants,bars and nightspots. Also, Aguada Fort which is just nearby, is a worth a look see.

Candolim is in North Goa, about 13 km from Panjim. Thivim is the closest railway station.

Agonda beach

Agonda beach is a long slice of beach and is relatively unknown among the crowd. It is a peaceful locality, although now in the process of being discovered. Shacks are available at the beach.

Agonda is located at South Goa, about 76 km from Panjim. Canacona is the closest railway station.

Vagator beach

Vagator beach is where you should go if you like to party. This is the capital of Goa trance parties. A psychedelic experience is certain to be enjoyed. People party till the sun rises at every nook and corner around the beach.

Vagator is in North Goa. It is 22km from Panjim. Thivim is the closest railway station.

Cavelossim, Mobor and Varca beaches

These beaches are extremely clean and unspoiled. The sands are pristine and snow white. Several luxury resorts are located here.
