Brunelleschi Hotel – A Summit Hotel

Hotel Brunelleschi was formed out of the original historic structures of Pagliazza, a Byzantine tower, and San Michele in Palchetto, a medieval church (where the architect Filippo Brunelleschi is said to have prayed). The lobby and bar are modern in style, but set against the oldest part of the hotel—Pagliazza Tower—which dates from Roman times. The hotel’s clientele is generally tourists.

Amenity highlights: The first-floor of the hotel doubles as an event space, and showcases original 1920s Tiffany-style stained-glass windows by the designer Galileo Chini. Downstairs, a private museum features antique ceramics, crockery, and original Roman baths. Other amenities include a bar and a restaurant.

Insider tip: A small roof terrace on the fifth floor offers a close-up view (200 meters away) of Florence’s famous Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral). It is possible to see the massive red-brick dome, and the entire length of the building as the view is from the side.

Driving directions from Florence Airport: From the airport, follow the signs for the city center. From the Piazza Duomo, turn left and follow the road leading to Via del Proconsolo. Take the first right into Via del Corso, and then the second right into Via Santa Elisabetta. This leads you right to Piazza Santa Elisabetta, where you will find Hotel Brunelleschi.

Taxis are commonly used to get from the airport to town (fares vary), although it is also possible to take the half-hourly bus, which takes passengers to Santa Maria Novella Station, in the center of Florence.
