Museo dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore

It was built by Repubblica Fiorentina and named “fabbriceria”. This Museum housed works of art by Arnolfo di Cambio, the first architect of the Opera, Giotto, Andrea Pisano, Francesco Talenti and Filippo Brunelleshi.

The Museum contains Michelangelo’s Pietà, which he had actually intended for his own tomb and here Michelangelo sculputered his David with the marble belonged to Opera itself. Moreover the Museum housed works of art formerly located in the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore as Donatello’s Mary Magdalen, some bas-relief of bapistery and Luca della Robbia and Donatello’s cantorie (choir gallery).

All sculputers coming from outside have been replaced by copies. The Museum is leading by a Council of Administration, the president is elected by Home Office together with diocesan order.
