Transportation in Venice

Public transportation in Venice is run by ACTV (Azienda Comunale Transporti Venezia) they activate busses, trams and ferries.

Several bus lines connect Venice to land junctions such as Mestre and Marghera. All the lines arrive in Venice Terminus on Piazale Roma.

Water taxis, or “Lancia” as they are called, are very expensive.

Most of the transportation in Venice is done by motor boats. The speed in the canals is limited to 10Km /h (6 mph) to prevent the creation of waves that could risk the foundations of the ancient houses of Venice.

Ticket books can be purchased on most piers, and there are also daily and weekly passes.

Single tickets and books can also be purchased in most “tabacchi” – tobacco shops, bars and newsstands. The tickets must be stamped on the pier before boarding the motor boat or bus. Passengers without a stamped ticket will be heavily fined.

Normally, the service starts early in the morning (between 6:00 and 7:30) and ends at night. Some lines are also active at night, with lower frequency, such as line 1 that sails along the Grand Canal at least until midnight.
